Toronto Police encourage drivers and pedestrians to follow rules of the road to avoid future tragedy
On Thursday, June 3, 2004 two pedestrians were struck by cars within one hour of each other in Toronto. Both pedestrians succumbed to their injuries.
As a result Toronto Police are encouraging pedestrians and motorists to be alert to avoid these tragedies in the future.
Top three things drivers do to cause a collision:
1. Travel above speed limit,
2. Not actively looking for pedestrians (drivers should make eye contact with pedestrians, especially when turning), and
3. Being impatient and not leaving time for pedestrians, especially seniors while they are crossing the street.
Top three things pedestrian do to cause a collision:
1. Crossing without traffic controls (pedestrians crossing without right of way, mid-block or between parked cars),
2. Not paying attention entering or exiting TTC vehicles, and
3. Not being visible and not making eye contact with drivers (wear bright colours at night to make sure you are seen).
Drivers and pedestrians have a responsibility to follow the rules of the road and not compromise the safety of any road users.
