Barred drivers sneak back?

LICENCE SUSPENSIONS are not keeping the most dangerous drivers off Ontario's roads, according to a new study by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The study found 7,154 drivers in 2001 had not reactivated their licences six months after their suspensions were lifted.

Andrew Murie, MADD Canada's national executive director, said research shows 75% of suspended drivers continue to get behind the wheel, causing up to 17% of fatal accidents.

Murie said suspended drivers are likely ducking a mandatory $475 program and $100 reinstatement fee to get their licences back. Both programs were introduced in Ontario in 1998.

One year earlier, 2,428 drivers did not reactivate their licences six months after their suspensions ended.

Insurance costs might also deter some from reactivating their licences.

"We're very disappointed. While the front door is barred, the back door is open," Murie said. "This puts us all at risk. Unlicensed drivers get caught by bad luck," Murie said.
