TAXIMILES Program Goes National

TaxiMiles launches national “Safe Way Home”™ program to provide safe transportation for youth and the elderly and to help reduce the incidence of drinking and driving

(TORONTO – MAY 6, 2004) – After only four months of successful operation in the GTA, TaxiMiles, the first Canadian company to introduce taxi cheques promoting and delivering a Safe Way Home™ for everyone, today announced it is taking its program across the country. With the goal of helping provide safe transportation for youth and the elderly and helping reduce the incidence of drinking and driving, the new national program will enable Canadians from coast-to-coast to benefit from TaxiMiles. The program will be adopted in cities across the country, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, , Mississauga, Guelph, Hamilton, Oshawa, Cornwall, Ottawa, Hull, Montreal and Halifax.

TaxiMiles are cheques that can be purchased in a $5 denomination and are redeemable only as taxi fares with participating cab companies. TaxiMiles can be purchased by companies for employees, by parents who want to ensure a Safe Way Home™ for their teens and by those concerned with the safe transportation of elderly parents or relatives. Taxi companies currently involved in the GTA include Beck, Co-op, Diamond, Kingsboro and Maple Leaf. All have been approved by the City of Toronto Municipal Licensing & Standards to display TaxiMiles decals in their taxis, showing that they are affiliated with the program.

“We’re very proud that just four months after our start-up, we’ve attracted support from such major organizations as Labatt Breweries of Canada, the Canadian Taxi Association and members, 310-TAXI, Sunnybrook & Women’s College Health Sciences Centre, and particularly the City of Toronto.” said Michael Roncon, President and CEO of TaxiMiles. “We’re delighted that with this strong support-base, we can now take our program to Canadians across the country to help ensure a Safe Way Home™ for more people.”

“At Labatt, we place a high priority on promoting the responsible use of our products and, for years, we’ve worked with numerous partners to help communicate our message – Know When to Draw the Line,” says Nigel Miller, Director of Public Affairs for Labatt Breweries of Canada.  “By supporting Taxi Miles, we hope we can provide another incentive for Canadians to choose a Safe Way Home™.”

“Social responsibility is something that everyone should be encouraging,” said Ted Holtzheuser, Vice-president, Corporate & Community Relations for TaxiMiles. ”Partnering with other taxi companies in various cities across the country will allow us to help ensure a safe and reliable transportation solution for many more individuals, families and companies.”

In recent years, there has been a dramatic shift in attitudes towards drinking and driving, youth and Senior safety. There have been changes to the laws that govern social responsibility under the Criminal Code. The severity of revised penalties encourages both personal and corporate changes in the way in which Society responsibly manages itself. Taximiles will encourage people to plan ahead and take a taxi to dinner or social events thereby eliminating the decision to drive home.

TaxiMiles, based in Toronto, provides Canadian communities with TaxiMiles Cheques for purchase, that are redeemable only as taxi fares with participating cab companies. It is TaxiMiles’ and its partners’ undertaking to provide a “Safe Way Home”™ for everyone.
