Operation "PED-SAFE"

“Elderly woman struck, young child hit while in crosswalk, family of three run down by impaired driver, pedestrian struck by vehicle while attempting to cross on red light.” On average 40 pedestrians die each year in motor vehicle collisions. Tragically, traffic collisions involving pedestrians are far too common on Toronto city streets.

“We must do everything that we can to ensure a safe environment for all pedestrians within our communities,” says Superintendent Stephen Grant, head of Traffic Services. “To achieve this, we must call upon all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to obey all traffic laws and to be diligent when using our city streets.”

To date, there have been 8 traffic fatalities in 2004, of these 5 have been pedestrians. On Monday March 15th, 2004, the Toronto Police Service will embark on a one-week education and enforcement campaign entitled Operation “PED-SAFE”. This campaign will target drivers, and cyclists whose aggressive driving habits endanger the safety of pedestrians, and to pedestrians who fail to obey traffic signals, or who fail to yield to traffic. Further, this campaign will coincide with the March break school holiday. All drivers should pay special attention to public play areas.
