Third pedestrian struck this week

MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 4 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at 5:53 p.m., 76-year-old Anna Lewkowicz of Etobicoke, was crossing Central Parkway East, south of Eglinton Avenue. Crossing mid-block, she successfully traversed the northbound lanes but was struck by a southbound car after making it three-quarters of the way across the road.

Mrs. Lewkowicz was transported to Trillium Health Centre and then transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Two other pedestrian collisions occurred on Monday, March 1, one of them fatal. All three collisions remain under investigation by the Major Collision Bureau.

As the warmer weather brings people out of the house, Peel Regional Police are reminding the public that roadways are a dangerous place and should be viewed as such by people of all ages. Members of the community are urged to assist the police by reviewing traffic safety with all members of their family.

Police appeal to both motorists and pedestrians to think safety at all times and to remember that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility.
